Local Wellness Policy
In June 2004, the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act was signed into law, making it mandatory for all local education agencies (school districts) participating in USDA's school meals program to create a local wellness policy by July 1, 2006. Click here for policy requirements (law).

Partner Steering Committee organizations and AFHK Team members, has an online
Wellness Policy Tool to provide enhanced assistance to school districts,
schools, parents, teachers, and students to build and implement meaningful
wellness policies. The Wellness Policy Tool provides guidance and information
for the ongoing process of developing, implementing and evaluating Wellness
Policies. It provides practical advice, shares stories from real people
working to implement Wellness Policies in their school districts, and addresses
specific challenges faced by schools across the nation.

- The Healthy School Action Tool (HSAT) is a Michigan-specific assessment for individual school buildings to assess their current nutrition, physical education/activity and tobacco environment. - School Wellness Policy and Practice: Meeting the Needs of Low-Income Students. The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) developed a resource for assisting school districts with the development and implementation of wellness policies and, in particular, the special nutrition concerns of low-income students.
